Croagh Patrick

What do Elbrus, Olymp and Croagh Patrick have in common? They symbolise holy mountains in their countries. I had the chance to climb Croagh Patrick on my last day of my Western Way Trip. Some people go up barefoot, but after a long rain in the morning and a last minute decision to climb, I ruled out this option. It is busy, when the pilgrims have their annual gathering in july. But only a few climbers are on their way end of october, and in Campbells Bar at the reek is plenty of space for a rest.

Was haben der Elbrus, Olymp und der Croagh Patrick gemeinsam? Sie symbolisieren heilige Berge in ihren Laendern. Ich hatte die Gelegenheit den Croagh Patrick an meinem letzten Tag meines Western Way Trips zu besteigen. Einige Leute gehen da Barfuss rauf, aber nach einem langen Morgenregen und einer spontanen Entscheidung auf den Gipfel zu marschieren, hab ich's ganz normal raufgeschafft. Wenn die Pilger zu Tausenden Ende Juli auf den Gipfel steigen, wird es eng am Berg. Aber Ende Oktober war's nicht so voll und in Campbells Bar an der Basisstation gab's auch noch reichlich Platz.

Connemara Part 2

After an overnight stop in the Connemara Hostel I walked alongside the Killary Fjord and further on along River Erriff towards Drummin. However I couldn't find an accomodation there and was lucky for having met a woman, who gave me a lift to Westport, where I stayed overnight.

Nach einer Uebernachtung im Connemara Hostel bin ich morgens den Killary Fjord entlang gelaufen. Die Route fuehrte dann weiter am Erriff Fluss nach Drummin. Meine Hoffnung dort spontan eine Unterkunft zu bekommen, hat sich allerding schnell in Luft aufgeloest. Gluecklicherweise hat mich eine Frau mit nach Westport mitgenommen, wo ich meine letzte Nacht auf meinem Trip verbracht habe.

Connemara Part 1

After the long Jazz Weekend in Cork, I went for a hike in Connemara. My journey started in Oughterard, close to the shore of Lough Corrib north of Galway. It's the official Western way, which runs over distance of 180km. End of october you barely meet anyone on the track and you can enjoy the solitude of wide grassland and rolling hills. 

Nach dem langen Jazz Wochenende in Cork bin ich fuer ein paar Tage nach Connemara gefahren. Der Ausgangspunkt fuer die Wanderung war Oughterard in der Naehe vom Corrib See und noerdlich von Galway. Ich war auf dem offiziellen Western Way unterwegs, der sich ueber eine Gesamtdistanz von 180km erstreckt. Ende Oktober ist da kaum was los und du kannst die ganze Einsamkeit und das weite Grassland und die rollenden Huegel fuer dich geniessen.

Cork and Jazz Festival

Once a year the City of Cork hosts the Jazz Festival for 3 to 4 days. You can attend Jazz events from one in the afternoon till midnight. I had the chance during my visit to Cork to check out the Franciscan Well Brewery, which is based in Cork. Franciscan Well produces the Red Rebel Ale, which is my second favourite beer in Ireland. Sometimes musicians just have a session in a pub and a saxofonista and guitar player perform a gig together. 

Einmal im Jahr findet in Cork das alljährliche Jazz Festival für meist 3 bis 4 Tage statt. Dann kann man Jazz von mittags um eins bis nach Mitternacht in verschiedenen Locations der Stadt geniessen. Ich hatte während meines Aufenthaltes die Gelegenheit die Franciscan Well Brauerei zu besuchen. Franciscan Well stellt das 'Red Rebel Ale' her, was mein zweit liebstes Getränk hier in Irland ist. Manchmal haben Musiker auch nur ne Session im Pub, und Saxofonista und Guitarre Spieler geben alles bei ihrem gemeinsam Gig (=Auftritt). 

Toilettenbeschilderung

Fír, Gents, Male etc. - all these words are elementary to distinguish between boys and girls, when going to the toilet. I noticed, that bars and restaurants are very creative, when it comes to put the sign on the door. I collected so far a couple of good pictures and hope to incorporate them in the 'irish Triptychon', which I want to create after the trip.

Fír, Gents, Male etc. - alle sind von Wichtigkeit um zwischen Mädchen und Buben unterscheiden zu können, wenn du auf die Toilette musst. Ich habe festgestellt, dass Bars und Restaurants sehr kreativ sein können, beim aufhängen von Toilettenschildern. Ich habe bisher einige gute Exemplare abgelichtet und hoffe sie in dem 'irischen Triptychon' einarbeiten zu können, dass ich nach dem Trip anfertigen will.

Euro 2016 qualifier

The 8th of october was a memorable evening for the irish football, though they weren't playing the high-end class sport, they were fabulous in the defense and with a lucky punch by Shane Long they kept three important points at home. Anyway it was a grand night to watch the Weltmeister, the atmosphere before, during and after the game was great. The defeat was not a big deal for our team, and I felt ok wearing my german jersey with all the irish patrons around me.

Der achte Oktober war ein unvergesslicher Abend für den irischen Fussball. Obwohl sie keinen hochklassigen Sport ablieferten, waren sie hervorragend in der Defensive, und mit einem glücklichen Treffer von Shane Long, haben sie die drei Punkte zu Hause behalten. Egal, es war ein toller Abend mal den Weltmeister live zu sehen. Die Atmosphäre vor, während und nach dem Spiel war großartig. Die Niederlage war zu verschmerzen, und Ich fühlte mich ok in meinem Deutschland Trikot umgeben von all der irischen Anhängerschaft. 

Little traffic-light man

Pedestrians don't have an easy life in Ireland. And the odd switch from the red traffic light to the green traffic light entails this kind of sport on the streets of Dublin and elsewhere: Jaywalking. You can dare to cross the street, when the orange light is still on, but be careful, after the switch to red you may have just a second to save your life.

Fußgänger haben es nicht leicht auf Irlands Straßen. Und der seltsame Wechsel von rot auf grün bringt eine Art Volkssport mit sich: Jaywalking, was soviel bedeutet, dass sich keiner um die Ampelfarbe schert. Du kannst es wagen, gerade noch die Straße bei Orange zu überqueren, aber schaltet es auf Rot um, bleibt dir ca. eine Sekunde um dein Leben zu retten.
